Who We Are

Vision

The MASH Coalition is committed to expanding opportunities to provide solar PV for multifamily affordable housing properties and the low-income residents they serve, toward the ultimate goal of “bridging the Green Divide” and making the benefits of clean solar power available to all Californians.

ABOUT

The MASH Coalition comprises a group of affordable housing organizations with a long history of developing, owning and managing affordable housing in the state of California.  Collectively, the 18 Coalition members own and/or manage approximately 80,000 dwelling units that are home to roughly a quarter million low-income tenants in California (as of January 2016).

Coalition members have been significant participants in the statewide Multifamily Affordable Solar Housing (“MASH”) program since its inception, and have been giving voice to deed-restricted multifamily affordable housing interests as active participants in the California Public Utility Commission’s (CPUC) rulemaking proceedings.  Our successful engagement with the CPUC has helped both to extend and expand the MASH program as well as to create new programs and opportunities to provide solar electric power to low-income housing communities.  >> READ MORE

The Coalition is simply a collective voice, providing an efficient way for members, who collectively have hundreds of years of experience in the multifamily affordable housing industry, to make sure that point of view is represented.  Reflecting the industry, the Coalition includes both nonprofit and for-profit affordable housing providers based throughout California.  Coming together in free and voluntary association, members neither pay nor are paid to participate.  Whether we view our residents as customers or the very reason for our organization’s existence, our interests in solar align with those of the low-income residents we serve.  Building programs and practices as needed to bridge the “Green Divide” and make the benefits of solar power available to all Californians reduces our energy expenses, stabilizes and strengthens our affordable housing communities, grows the economy, furthers state energy and climate policy, and meaningfully addresses global warming.

Greater access to solar is, simply put, good business for all.

We have consistently been the voice of affordable housing stakeholders at the California Public Utilities Commission and State Legislature and have achieved great results in implementing legislation and regulations that make it easy for affordable housing to join the green economy. Our members have actively participated in the solar programs we’ve advocated for because it makes financial sense and helps improve our communities.
